Exciting News!!! We are in full swing with the new Kindergarten programme, which focuses on 4 frames of learning outlined in the new curriculum guide: Self-Regulation, Belonging & Contributing, Literacy & Math, and Problem-Solving & Innovation. This can be discussed further at the student led conferences.
Self-Regulation & Well-Being and Belonging & Contributing Basically, these 2 frames encompass social skills, interactions with peers, and students' feelings about themselves and towards others. Most of the learning is on-going through the year. A major focus is how our students communicate with others. We will observe how students interact and how they use problem-solving skills. Students will be encouraged throughout the year to effectively communicate and problem solve. Literacy & Math We will focus on the letters "Nn, Cc, Kk and Ee". Students will continue to make connections to, and predictions about read alouds. We will continue to learn how to print and represent numbers from 1-10. The children will also continue to collect, organize, display, and interpret data. We will begin to identify, explore and extend simple patterns. Problem Solving and Innovating: We will observe patterns in the natural environment. Students will also begin to sort living and non-living things using their preferred method (t-chart, hula-hoops, sorting mats etc.). Inquiry based learning is daily and ongoing based on the students ever changing interests of the world around them. Past Inquiries We explored a lot of fall wonders in October. The children loved bringing in leaves of different shapes and colours. They questioned why leaves changed colour, why they have stems and why they are different shapes. Our trip to the Pumpkin Patch led to more inquiry. They loved the "Peanut" pumpkin and enjoyed scraping away at the "peanut" looking growths on the outside. The white pumpkin was especially awesome. We discovered that it had green guts! Some children thought it smelled like cucumbers! Things to do at Home Continue to practice printing their name, using lower case letters (except for the first letter of course). Check out the Jolly Phonics songs....just search it on YouTube or check out the link below! Allow time for your child to ask questions about stories read aloud at home. Provide writing opportunities (clipboard, journal, diary)..even if it may not always look like "writing" to you, in your child's mind it is! Have your child look for patterns in everyday things (books that repeat, trees, clothing etc...).
